It’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week and that means plenty of juicy Jelly Bean rumours are knocking around the huge consumer trade show.
First off, Google has coyly pointed to the existence of its forthcoming smartphone OS by placing a bowl full of jelly beans in the middle of its private meeting area. Subtle.
More importantly, a vague date of Autumn 2012 has been pencilled in for Android 5.0 by Hiroshi Lockheimer, vice president of engineering for mobile at Google.
“After Android 4 comes 5, and we haven’t announced the timing yet, which we’re still sorting out,” explained Lockheimer to Computerworld. “There’s a lot of engineering work behind it still, and there’s also just the question of how to time it.”
“In general, the Android release cadence is one major release a year with some maintenance releases that are substantial still.”
Last year, Ice Cream Sandwich was unleashed in November so the above statements point to Google working on a similar timeline. Needless to say we’re hugely excited already.
