Needless to say, the ability to sync your device with iTunes over Wi-Fi is one of the great features in iOS 5. If you’re still using iOS 4 or lower, the only way to sync your iPhone or iPad with iTunes is by connecting the device to computer via USB. Now with the iOS 5, your device can truly be wire free.
You probably thought that the Wi-Fi Sync feature is automatically enabled once you upgrade to iOS 5. It turns out you need to go through a simple configuration process before your device is ready for wireless sync.
Setup iTunes for WiFi Sync
To enable Wi-Fi Sync, first connect your iPhone (or iPad) to computer using USB. Launch iTunes (please upgrade to iTunes 10.5 if you haven’t done so) and select your device. Under the Summary screen, check the “Sync with this iPhone over Wi-Fi” option and click the “Apply” button.
That’s it. Now your iPhone is capable to sync over Wi-Fi and you can disconnect your device from computer.
Sync Your Device over Wi-Fi
From now on, as long as your iPhone and computer are in the same Wi-Fi network, iTunes can automatically detect your device. Whenever you want to sync your device with iTunes, go to Settings -> General -> iTunes Wi-Fi Sync and tap “Sync Now” button.
The iTunes sync process then starts and you’ll notice a “Sync” icon (i.e. circular arrow) appeared in the top status bar. While syncing you’re free to use other applications. You don’t have to wait for the sync process to complete. Cool, right?
Not Working?!
In case the “Sync Now” button is greyed out, it’s likely you haven’t launched iTunes on your computer or your iPhone is not connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
Apple suggests you to connect your iPhone to the power source before starting the Wi-Fi sync. Normally you don’t have to. The Wi-Fi sync stillworks without connecting to the power source.
