How To Jailbreak iPhone 4S / iPad 2 Untethered On iOS 5.0.1 Using Absinthe Tool

Ok people! It is here at last. The Chronic Dev Team has released the Greenpois0n Absinthe tool which will enable you to jailbreak both iPad 2 and iPhone 4S on iOS 5.0.1 untethered. Full tutorial after the break.

The untethered jailbreak for A4 devices was released by Pod2g at when the new year was at the brink. He formed a “Dream Team” later on to find an exploit for A5 untethered jailbreak. Finally he has accomplished his mission.
Warning: This guide is for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 ONLY. If you’re looking for iPhone 3GS/iPhone 4 jailbreak guide, check out here. For jailbreak guide of the original iPad, you can check out here.
The new tool will jailbreak the iPhone 4S untethered on iOS 5 and iOS 5.0.1. However, the iPad 2 will be jailbroken only on iOS 5.0.1.

Complete Guide to Jailbreak iPhone 4S (iOS 5/5.0.1) / iPad 2 (iOS 5.0.1) Untethered

What You Need

  • iTunes v10.5 (Download from Apple’s iTunes Page if you haven’t upgraded)
  • Greenpois0n Absinthe 0.1.2-2 (Download from here) [mirror] for Mac OS X
  • Windows and Linux users have to wait due to the heavy load on greenpois0n site but the tool will be uploaded soon for them. For Windows users, check out our Absinthe jailbreak guide for Windows.

Jailbreak Procedures Using Absinthe

Step 1: Make a backup of your iPhone 4S (or iPad 2) using iTunes. This ensures you can recover the data even jailbreak fails.
Step 2: Attach your iPhone 4S (or iPad 2) you wish to jailbreak to your computer via USB.
Note: Users who are using iPhone 4S and want a carrier unlock (e.g. ultrasn0w) should NOT update to iOS 5.0.1 and stay on iOS 5.0. They can apply the jailbreak staying on that firmwareversion.
Step 3: Open the Greenpois0n Absinthe tool and press the jailbreak button after the device is detected as shown in this image.
Step 4:The Absinthe tool will go through various steps: Sending initial data, waiting for reboot, waiting for device to finish booting, Preparing jailbreak data, and Sending payload data. Just wait a while and let the tool jailbreak your iPhone 4S or iPad 2.
Step 5: Once completed, an icon named “Absinthe” will appear on your iPhone 4S/ iPad 2. Press it and you will be redirected to greenpois0n.com which will install Cydia on your A5 device replacing the Absinthe icon as shown in this image.
Note: Some of you might receive “error establishing a database connection” message. Don’t panic as Planetbeing, the iPhone hacker, has a solution. Just go to Settings > General > Network > VPN > On. Apart from that, you might also experienceCamera Roll error after installing the jailbreak. Planetbeing has tweeted that re-running the jailbreak will fix that too.
